I know many of you are wondering whether you should purchase this Acer CXI2 or the Asus M004U. I chose the Acer. The Acer is superior for the following reasons:
1. The popular $150 Asus M004U CN60 being sold on Amazon with the 2955U CPU will NOT be getting support for Android apps or the Google Play store. The Acer CXI2 has a newer 3205U CPU, and will be getting the Play store and Android app support in future Chrome OS updates. Besides the CPU they are basically the same. Performance between the 2 are virtually identical. The only real important difference is the CPU, and the Acer sports the newer and Android App supported 3205U.
2. The price. No other Chromebox can beat the current CXI2 price of under $130. You also get a keyboard and mouse for that price.
Some other notes I have based on concerns in other reviews:
– There is a fan on this unit, and it does run all the time. It is not loud. It is noticeable only if you are in a silent room. The click of a pen or any kind of movement is louder than the fan. I had multiple tabs open and could not get the fan to rev up any higher than normal. I think it basically one speed and on all the time.
– Upgrading the memory and storage on the Acer is more steps than the Asus, but still easy. The only added step beyond the Asus is that you need to 5 extra screws that hold the CPU heat sink and motherboard on, and then flip the motherboard over to access the RAM/storage. I did it without any instructions and was able to figure it out and have it done within 10 minutes.
– The keyboard and mouse are OK. Honestly at <$130 you can’t expect much in terms of the included accessories. They work fine, look fine, and will suit most peoples needs. I prefer wireless, so I plan to ditch the included mouse/keyboard only for that reason.
I’ve built Windows PCs since 1995. Always the same drill = install, install, install, then configure like crazy to undo all the defaults, then babysit that security software like a hawk. That’s all over with this Chromebox. I’m happy to use my old monitor and just needed to buy a Display Port to DVI (male) adapter. The display quality is beautiful for surfing the web using an older 20" HP LED backlit desktop display. The Chromebox is small and nearly silent and seems fairly robust with a fair amount of metal in its construction. This thing boots 8 seconds and switches between user accounts instantly. The keyboard and mouse are perfectly fine. Keystrokes are a bit springy, but no aberrant characters and it can keep up with a fast data entry. Mouse is standard with no glitches. Everything connected securely and flawlessly. This is an outstanding family PC because of its inherent security. I can let a guest go straight on and don’t have to worry about any software being mishandled or securities being circumvented. All in all, a great replacement for an ailing Windows monster PC that doesn’t have to go to serious game-ville or manage AutoCAD or something of that sort. If it ever hiccups, all you do is reset (powerwash) the OS and it’s as clean and secure as the day you first unboxed it.

Just to clarify some differences I’ve noticed from some other reviews here: – The model that I received has an Intel Celeron CPU 3215U running at 1.70GHz.This is a bit faster than the 1.5GHz that is advertised. – If you have an older printer that is not cloud ready, most printer manufacturers now have very convenient Android and iOS apps for your phone or tablet that work directly with your printer.I have a Canon printer that is wireless but not cloud ready and it works great with the Canon app that allows for printing and scanning.It’s a few more steps to get a document or photo printed, but it works great.Of course, if you want a printer that is cloud ready, you can find any number for around $80. – The fan in the Chromebox is normally very quiet, but it does speed up for short periods when the CPU is under stress.The fan noise is not really anything to worry about. – I have a very old set of speakers connected to the headphone jack and they worked perfectly.No humming before login – in fact I leave them on all the time and they work just like they did when connected to my old Windows PC. – I was surprised to find that my old web camera and microphone also work right out of the box.You may need to select the camera name for both the default camera and microphone settings, but it works fine.The web cam I’m using is an older model Microsoft LifeCam VX-2000. – The mouse that came with the unit is wired, but has a very nice feel and the scroll wheel is very quiet. – Instead of the included Chrome-style keyboard that is OK, I am using a wireless Logitech keyboard that has the USB dongle.It works great too. – I installed the Chromebox to the back of my monitor – an older Samsung SyncMaster E2420.The screw holes line up perfectly with the bracket that is included with the Chromebox.This makes for a very uncluttered desktop.
I have a long history with Chrome OS, having had 4 Chromebooks over the years, and this Chromebox works just like the OS on a Chromebook – fast, safe, and very cloud friendly.I find that the Google Drive works great as storage that can be accessed from any device, is always backed up and secure, and has plenty of useful apps like Docs, Sheets, Photos, etc.
I highly recommend this device for anyone looking for a reliable, affordable, and simple, PC replacement.
This chromebox has wireless AC, which is perfect. All USB 3.0 slots, starts up in about 3-4 seconds. Download the "Bing wallpaper for Chromebook" for wallpapers that change on a daily basis, automatically. User friendly. It doesn’t come with a screen, obviously, or speakers, so you’re going to need to purchase those separately. Also, the keyboard that it comes with doesn’t have function keys, which can be a problem if you use a lot of function keys for shortcuts. Easily fixed, though, just use a keyboard that does have function keys. It instead has keys that are tailored towards use with the Google OS, such as the "magnifying glass" key where the caps lock typically is on a regular keyboard. It’s basically the same thing as the Windows Key for Windows OS. Anyway, Very good price for what you get.
So often I’d forget I’m running an under $300 Chromebox and not my Core i5 Windows desktop. Even ran 2 1080p50 videos simultaneously without problem. The bonus is it runs Android apps right out of the box! Gave away my Windows desktop already, and I can’t imagine going back to Windows.
